The schools typically pay one-half of the cost of health insurance, and amount deducted will be only 2 to 3% of your regular income.
It is common that small deductions may be taken from your salary for several months to guarantee payment of utility bills and other obligations. These deposits are refunded at the end of your term of employment, after your final bills are paid off.
In general, it is much cheaper to live in Korea than in North America or any other English-speaking countries. Many foreign teachers find it possible to save a considerable portion of their take-home pay while working in Korea, since your out-of-pocket expenses may consume only as little as one-third of your salary.
As the school provides your residence, you are responsible only for your utilities (telephone, electricity, gas, water, cable, and internet). Your home will typically be located within walking distance from the school. For your leisure travel, transportation within Korea is very cheap and convenient. Due to express train system named KTX you can reach every major cities within 1~3 hours. The costs of subway transportation in the larger cities vary with the distance traveled, but start at about 50 cents. Long distance express buses and trains are fast and much cheaper than you expect. |
